Happy Birthday to me

Last night we had cake with the neighbor kids to celebrate my birthday. My present was that the angel food cake I made came out of the pan in one piece. Holly gave me high fives and the appropriate amount of excitement when it happened.
Before school the girls were fussing with each other. I had to use the "it's my birthday" card before 7 am. Holly's reaction was, "Oh! No! We didn't make a cake!" to which Julia cried from the other room, "YOU RUINED IT! Daddy's bringing a cake home!" to which Holly cried back, "NO! I DIDN'T RUIN IT! YOU DID! I DIDN'T SAY THAT!"
And before we left for school 30 minutes later I'd told them that it was my birthday and I didn't care about a cake or presents - I just wanted them to be nice to each other for the day. Ha!
After school they were still bickering and Oliver tried to distract Holly telling her to go make me a birthday card. She came back to the room 2 minutes later with a card, pencil written, "Happy Birthday! from the family, Holly, Alan, Daddy, (and Julia with a big fat X on it)".
Other excitement from the day was talking to my dad, who told me the year he turned 36 was the first he felt really old - since 36 is half of 72 and he figured life was about half over. (Thanks, Dad. What's even better is that I had that same thought myself earlier in the day! Oh genetics!)
