The Angel Oak

On Friday we went down to see the Angel Oak. It's a giant live oak tree in Charleston. Estimated to be something like 1500 years old. It's amazing.

It's a magnificent tree. Amazing how the branches grow. Many branches are supported by 4 by 4s or metal posts. There are signs posted to caution people against climbing or carving on the tree.

I understand the desire to prolong the life of the tree and I am awed by it. But I also wonder what it would really look like if left to its own strength to hold itself up. And think I would find it equally awesome if left alone.
