Our Week So Far...

We are at Folly Beach this week with my mom and my brother and his family. It's become our new family tradition to take the week between Christmas and New Years and spend it together at a beach. I love that it's relaxing and really feels like a vacation.

We've been finding lots of starfish - dead mostly I think. Also think I saw something in the news about lots washing ashore without explanation.

All along the beach there are rock walks built to help fight beach erosion. The kids have loved climbing on them. I kind of like that they give a marker for boundaries...

We aren't far from Morris Island Lighthouse. It's slowly being taken over by the ocean.

We've had lots of great family time so far...

But the week had a rocky start when Alan locked my keys in the car. Oops. He went down to get something and came back up saying - "I left your keys down at the car. Oh well! And I can't get them!" mumble mumble... as he scurried into his bedroom with whatever it was he'd retrieved in the process.
No luck breaking in. But Sean brought my extra set of keys from home the next day when he got an unexpected vacation day from work. Hooray! And he celebrated his birthday by fishing on the beach. With 5 kids.

So he didn't get to fish as much as he might have wanted to... but I think he had fun. And I know the kids did. Holly even wrote a message in the sand.

We caught the sunrise the next morning.

And that afternoon we drove through the Citadel.

And then walked downtown a little.

Ending up at St. Philip's Episcopal church and touring the cemetery there.

I love the old gravestones. I hope something similar could be said for me when I die as this - to have lived a well-spent life - and he was only 40.

I love the way the streets twist in places in downtown Charleston. And how the trees grow over the street.

On our way to dinner we walked about halfway across "The Big Bridge" as we like to call it.

The kids were troopers even though it was a little chilly and we were all getting hungry. Luckily I remembered to take a few crackers with me and I was not the crankiest in the bunch!

We caught the sunset as we walked. And then went to dinner at The Wreck. I had no idea that Alan liked fried shrimp like he did that night. And that fried oysters are delicious. And that the girls would eat fried grouper. And while it all sounds really greasy, it wasn't. We split some plates and all had plenty to eat.

We've all enjoyed some quality time playing with Christmas presents and aunt/uncle/granna.

And walking on the beach.

What a great vacation - what a cool family! Missing the beach and all of the big fun already (definitely missing some QT with Alan!). Your pics are awesome - how perfectly you captured all of the great times last week! Boo-hoo... let's go back!
