From the map it looks like we walked 9 or 10 miles in San Francisco. We took the ferry from Vallejo and walked up to Coit Tower. From there we could see Lombard St. That was Julia's first question when I talked to her and told her we were in California - had we gone to the crooked street yet. Then we headed toward Chinatown, apparently not taking the most direct route. We passed this street on the way down. We didn't go up the tower, but the view was still great from the grounds around it. We even spotted people actually using their rooftop patio.
Before we got to Chinatown we passed this restaurant... The Stinking Rose - A Garlic Restaurant - We Serve Our Garlic with Food...
Walking down the touristy street in Chinatown this man was playing some kind of instrument. His song sounded a lot like the song another man was playing on the same instrument a block down, but it was still amazing to me that any song could be played on such a simple looking instrument...
The markets in Chinatown were interesting and busy. Especially on the street we walked back up that wasn't so touristy. Lots of fruits and veggies on the street in boxes. And lots of people shopping. One grocer picked a green bean off the sidewalk before it got stepped on (I think) and tossed it back to the top of a pile... reminder to me to always wash vegetables before using... and since being pregnant has turned my stomach against chicken, the poultry in the windows kind of revolted me...
Out of Chinatown we headed across town. I don't remember what we were heading for. But we walked up a lot of hills... followed by steps... and more hills...
and eventually up Lombard St where we could see Coit Tower in the distance.
And then we headed down to the marina and yacht club and eventually to this Wave Organ. Put your ear to the pipes and listen to the music of the ocean - kind of like putting your ear to a huge shell. It was kind of neat. A long walk to get there. Through some ritzy looking neighborhoods and the yacht club where the friendly people all seemed to be on their yachts already.
Then we headed back to ferry. Through a park where it seemed the soccer fans had gathered to play after the end of the game. One urinated not far off the path we (along with throngs of other pedestrians and bikers) were on.
And finally back to the pier through the Fisherman's Wharf area. I liked the breads in the window of the Boudin bread store/restaurant/bakery.
We did stop for lunch at The Buena Vista Cafe. Other than that we walked. And enjoyed the view.
