I read the blog SimpleBites in my Google reader and saw an explanation for making homemade yogurt on it not long ago. Oliver's parents have made homemade yogurt for a long time - without a fancy yogurt maker - so I knew it could be done. I even tried it in the last year. I ended up with a quart of sour milk instead of yogurt. This time, it worked.
The SimpleBites method suggests pouring the milk/yogurt mix into a saucepan and using a heating pad, towel, and maybe the oven to keep it warm. I poured my milk/yogurt mix into a big thermal mug with a lid and set it on the top of the refrigerator. And it worked! I've got yogurt that tastes like Dannon!
Now I just need to wean the kids from vanilla yogurt with granola to plain yogurt with granola. I've "stretched" the last of a container of vanilla by adding almost an equal amount of plain yogurt to it - they had no idea. I'm not sure how long it will take to convert them to plain though.
