I took a little break from running for the last 10 days. My hip was hurting.
My right hip is always a little tight. It's the one part of my body that I stretch before I run, and periodically during the day just because. If I ride in the car for a couple of hours, when I stand up it takes a few steps to make my hip feel right. If I sit on the couch with my knee in my face and my foot on the cushion, my hip hurts when I get up. Usually when I run it takes about a half mile or so before I just can't feel it anymore.
Running has really helped alleviate my stress. If I feel antsy and irritated, I can go for a 30 minute run and suddenly I'm not irritated or antsy anymore, but I feel calm and capable.
When I ran on the 12th, I felt my hip the whole run. Stretching afterward hurt a lot more than usual. I could feel it when I walked for days after, and if I tried to chase Alan I actually felt pain. I decided to take a break and see if the pain would go away and back to "normal". It did - pretty much. I wouldn't say that my run yesterday was just like normal, but my hip did eventually settle into not hurting - especially if I concentrated on having good posture. Today I walked 2 miles and had the same sensation - that my hip felt better if I concentrated on standing tall as I walked. Strange.
Today as I walked I started thinking - I wonder - if the kids played more outside. If I forced them to go out and ride bikes. If I encouraged them to maybe run around the block or run a mile with me - would they get the same feel good feeings I get from running? Would extra exercise make them bicker at each other less? I'm thinking Yes. And I'm considering an experiment...
Maybe I can call it Family Fun Run... or A Bike Night... or just Go Outside and Play Because I Can't Stand to Listen to the Bickering Anymore!... something catchy like that.

I'm all for anything that has to do with being outside and getting some fresh air!!! I think it does (and can) do wonders for all!
Yay for you running and feeling better afterwards. I am the same way - or used to be...when I ran. I am starting again next week when I'm "allowed". =)
How do you get the exact distance of your runs you have listed on your blog, by the way?
I understand the stress of running. My issues are more towards slight exercise induced asthma and blisters on my feet. I have tried different inserts and only new shoes help, but I can't afford to spend the money for running shoes every year. Still I sing myself up for 5k races and am working up to the Army Ten Miler in October. The hardest thing for me is finding the right time. I hate morning runs, and get stuck in meetings in the evenings. Try to get out at lest 3 to 4x a week. Am up to 1 hour at least 2x a week, building up to 1:45 by September. If I run that long I knwo I have done 10 miles.
Keep it up and next year, maybe you can come est for the ATM! :-)
