to a Farm on a Friday

The worms ate the corn crop at Legare Farm so we went through a maze of wax myrtle. There were 10 punches to find along the way. Each harder than the one before the work. But if we found 6 of them, each child got a small candy.
It was hot and they were tired, but we found 9. Then on the way out of the maze we saw a snake cross our path. And we headed off for a hayride.

It was a nice surprise that the ride ended up at the cow pasture and we got to feel the cows treats. "Hold your hand flat and the cow will take the treat from you." No, hold your hand flat and the cow will take your whole hand (or arm in my case) in her mouth and eat the treat.
The kids were funny. They've rarely seen and never been close to cows I guess. It was a treat to see - and hear.
After the hayride the kids went for a horse ride. Two small circles for $3. But worth it, since this is the first time Alan has gotten on a horse or pony without crying. He did talk to the (rather unfriendly) girl leading the horse for the whole ride, and told her he was a little scared. I think she then talked back to him. Some. She offered no help to the kids getting on or off. And I sort of expected someone leading a horse for rides to wear footwear other than flip flops... but ropers probably wouldn't have gone with her sunglasses very well. (She did play the fiddle very well when we first arrived.)It was a fun afternoon and a great place to visit. Despite the remarks people working there made about needing money and hoping we'd spend it there - and despite the rather sour disposition of many of them and a general lack of enthusiasm to have us there. But regardless, it was fun. And I'd go back and recommend it to visit.
