Garage Sales

It's a rainy day and I had a garage sale this morning. I'm not sure posting before and after photos of the garage sale stuff would be worth it. If Julia had lasted out in the garage with me I think she could have kept count of all our customers. When she gave up and went in she was up to 7 or 8. However, I did get rid of quite a bit of stuff, so it wasn't a waste and if I hadn't given so much away for free I could have made more money (duh - what I mean to say is I could have made what felt like a lot of money instead of just some money). As it is I'm about to have to pay the girls for doing a living room/bedroom cleanup and there go more profits! Then again I think it's worth it to have them do it without fussing and I love to see Holly use the carpet sweeper.

So. Can anyone answer this question: WHY do people laugh when I ask them how much they want to pay for something? I realize they probably WANT it for free, but since we both know I'm selling it why do they laugh and not answer?

The only sale I don't feel 100% wonderful about is a small chest of drawers I gave away. A mom and daughter came by early looking for First Apartment furniture. I happened to have an old 3 drawer chest - too small for a real dresser, too big for an end table and that's how it ended up in the sale - that used to belong to a step-grandparent. The top will tear off if they lift it by the top (which I told them as they looked at it) but the base is solid and all real wood. A new piece of wood could easily replace the top. There's a little bit of sentimental value in it, but I haven't used it for years and it meant something to me that they liked it, needed it, and really wanted it. They said they were on a tight budget and asked what I wanted for it. I told them they could have it, that if they really liked it and wanted it that was enough for me. I think it was one thing in the sale (among a lot of littler things) that I wasn't sure would sell and I was happy someone wanted it. ANYWAY, they also bought a vacuum for $3. The lady gave me a 5. I had one single and said I'd have to go get quarters for the rest and SHE WAITED FOR IT. I just GAVE her a chest and she couldn't just say 'Keep the dollar'? So then I wished I hadn't given it away.

The girls took pictures of their accomplishments:

And here's what we came home to yesterday:

Look at the ground with no snow! This is my favorite time of year up there and I am missing it....boo hoo. Bummer the lady didn't "pay it forward". People never cease to amaze me.
